Sustainable Communities AZ Foundation (SC-AZ) is an Arizona nonprofit and 501c3  nonprofit organization whose goal is to educate, foster knowledge sharing, and build strong relationships with the community in order to instill a sense of individual responsibility while establishing a commitment to follow-through in living a more sustainable lifestyle; thus empowering our communities to make a shift toward sustainability today and for future generations.

SC-AZ foundation consists of a group of professionals that are well informed of the benefits of sustainability and are committed to its purpose and benefits. SC-AZ’s board of directors and core committee will consist of the following members: 

Bill Clay is founder of the award winning architecture firm of Bill Clay Design Studio LLC with over 28 years of experience in the metropolitan Phoenix area.  His firm has provided sustainable, sensible, creative, and objective architectural design services in response to client requirements, project context, the community and governing codes. He is also an organizing committee member for the 2009 and 2010 AzBizGreen Conference & Expo.  Mr. Clay serves on the Board of Directors as President of Sustainable Communities AZ Foundation.

Dan Fogel holds an MBA degree, is a credentialed Project Management Professional (PMP), and has over 20 years of business, organizational, and non-profit expertise.  He has spent over 10 years at Hewlett Packard and is the founder of A Greener Refill (a company focused on reducing the “printing” carbon footprint of businesses and consumers).  He has lived in Arizona for over 30 years and is very committed to supporting the local community and spreading the benefits of “sustainability.” Mr. Fogel serves on the Board of Directors as Chairman of Sustainable Communities AZ Foundation.

Kathy Fenner holds a B.S. degree, is a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor, Certified Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst and is in the process of obtaining her Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate (GA) accreditation.  In addition, she has a background as a Business Analyst and is a member of the Phoenix Green Chamber of Commerce (PGCC) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).   Ms. Fenner will serve on the Board of Directors for Sustainable Communities AZ Foundation and as Subject Matter Coordinator for SC-AZ.

Sharon Merrill holds an M.S. degree in Geology/Hydrogeology and a B.S. degree in Geology; is a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA); a LEED Green Associate; a Certified BPI Building Analyst; a Certified Water Harvesting Practitioner; and a Certified Professional Geologist. She is the founder and Principal of Shades of Green: Sustainability Advisors LLC. Ms. Merrill has an extensive background in the environmental field, co-founded and was President of a non-profit education organization, and has assisted in preparing an educational program on Smart Growth for middle school students. She is a member of the American Solar Energy Society, the Arizona Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, the Arizona Water Association, and the Phoenix Green Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Merrill serves on the Board of Directors for Sustainable Communities AZ Foundation and as a Subject Matter Coordinator for SC-AZ.

Nina Grout holds an M.S. degree in Education with focus on Adult Education and Sustainability Leadership, and a B.A. degree in Environmental Studies with concentration in Biology and minor in Geology. In addition, she is Project Manager at Tiedemann Globe and has held these other positions: Therapeutic Gardening Volunteer at Garden Partners, Portland, Oregon; Outreach Intern at Northwest Earth Institute, Portland, Oregon; prepared Portland State University Graduate Research Project document in partnership with Garden Partners outlining the importance of gardens for healing war veterans with PTSD; Environmental Scientist for ATC Associates Inc., Environmental Engineering, Cincinnati, Ohio; and is a Certified Master Organic Gardener. Ms. Grout will serve on the Board of Directors for Sustainable Communities AZ Foundation and as Subject Matter Coordinator for SC-AZ.

Sanford Lake is a Professional Engineer in the State of Arizona and President of Hogan Structure Group, LLC that was created in 2010.  Mr. Lake has over 12 years of structural design experience in both residential and commercial building projects such as LEED for Homes and LEED for New Construction.  He desires to bridge the gap with Native American tribes and groups with sustainable practices thru SC-AZ.  Mr. Lake will serve as Committee Chair for SC-AZ.

Bob Wikes is a certified GTAA (Golf Tournament Association of America) Consultant and founder/ CEO of 4 Green Golf; currently one of the only U.S. based companies producing Green Golf Tournaments.  He has spent 30 years as marketing and merchandising executive in the Consumer Electronics Industry including 20 years with Circuit City Stores. He is currently working with valley non-profits on a number of golf events and is an active member of the PGCC. Mr. Wikes will serve as Committee Chair for SC-AZ.
